Takayama and Shirakawa-go Day Trip: Explore the rural side of Japan and visit the city of Takayama as well as the quaint village of Shirakawa-go. The former is located in the Hida region in the Gifu Prefecture. Though it’s considered as a city, it isn’t like the kind most people are accustomed to. The designs of the buildings and houses are traditional, especially in the old town area. You can go for a relaxing stroll around the city and admire the architecture and the historical sites that you can visit, like the Higashiyama Walk and the Takayama Jinya. If you have some money to spare, you can even try out the local cuisine; do make sure to try out Hida Beef-based dishes! The latter is known for the many gassho zukuri houses that are lined up all around it. These houses are over hundreds of years old and their design is said to resemble the clasped hands of monks in prayer. One of the houses serves as a museum that promotes silk farming culture; you can check it out to see how silk worms are cultivated inside it.
