Interestingly, after the French Revolution it was utilised for a time as a prison cell for political prisoners until public pressure demanded it to be restored and protected as a national treasure. The abbey was declared a national monument in 87 and the island and its bay were internationally recognised for its human-created and natural beauty as a World Heritage site in 1979.
