Sanya lies between 18°09’34”—18°37’27” north latitude and 108°56’30”—109°48’28” east longitude, it covers an area of 1919.6sqkm with 91.6km long from east to west and 51km wide from south to north. Its population is nearly 540,000, more than 20 nationalities.
The main ethnic groups are the Han, Li, Miao and Hui peoples, with the Han being the majority. The minorities Li, Miao and Hui peoples have their own customs and languages, but they also speak the national language of China, Mandarin.
Sanya is characterized with tropical oceanic monsoon climate, with yearly average temperature stays at 25.4°C, and no matter believe or not, 35.7°C. is the historical supreme Sanya's temperature on record. The highest average temperature of Sanya falls in July at 28.3°C while the lowest comes in Jan. at 20.3°C. The duration of sunshine is 2563 hours, with a rainfall of 1279mm in a year.

According to the air quality appraising over 148 cities of 45 countries by the United Nations from 1998 to 2003, Sanya ranked No.1 in China, No.2 in the world in terms of air quality. Sanya is the origin of tropical rain forest. It has 63% of forest coverage with121 thousand hectares forestland and 62 thousand hectares afforestation. There are 9 national, provincial and municipal level nature preserves with 13,497 hectares. According to a general survey, the average life-span of Sanya people is 73.5 years. It is the place where people live the longest in China.
The currency is Renminbi (RMB), generally pronounced Yuan in written form, but spoken as Kuai. Note of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 are the main paper currency.

Basically, credit cards are only accepted in major tourist hotels, shops and restaurants. The locations accepting credits cards would put up a post to remind the guests. Bicycle is the key type of transportation for local citizens in China. We do not recommend any tourist to take a bicycle ride in the city since the roads are always packed with people.
Bus is another common means of getting around in the city. Services cover most areas. However, you should study the city map and local dialect before you venture out with buses.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES
It is advisable not to drink tap water. Instead drink boiled water in the flask or bottled-water provided by your hotel. In most cities, bottled beverages are available either in your hotel or department stores. Local beers are relatively inexpensive. There is a wide range of soft drinks or juice in bottle available at shops or store and supermarkets. Coffee or Tea is served at all hotels, however most of hotels are served local brands except in International chain hotels. Special diet like vegetarian meal cannot be made on the spot, please advise the land operator in advance, so that the arrangement can be prior to you arrival.
